As well as maps, I've been known to make a few other 3D tableaux and scenes. I love making animals and am particularly fond of Noah's Arks, although Noah never gets a look in. Below are some of the bits and pieces that don't fit into any other category.
90cm x70cm
This large version of Noah's Ark has been designed to be versatile and is made in two separate sections - the whole piece can be hung on the wall - or the land section can be lifted off from the sea section and sat flat on a shelf or table as a fee standing sculpture. This land section can also be seen from either side, as the back of the hills have been painted with an underwater scene.
70cm x 90cm. This image shows the reverse side of the top section of the Noah's Ark once the animals are all packed in and - painted with sea creatures, it shows the ark being tossed by the waves at sea.
70cm x 50cm. This image shows the top part of the wall-mounted ark separated from the ocean and sitting as a separate sculptural piece. I also designed a small painted ocean base for it to rest on to give the piece more stability.

Here’s a Rogues' Gallery of papier mache animals from my previous life in the UK. I used to make a lot of different animals to sell at art shows, but since moving to Australia, I concentrate on the maps, as the shipping costs are unfortunately too high to send these little creatures overseas.
Every now and again I'm overwhelmed by the urge to return to my roots and wallow in wallpaper paste and newsprint for a while... it's a messy business and the phase normally doesn't last long. Dodos are my specialty.

A while ago I had the pleasure of meeting a fascinating man, obsessed with collecting and commissioning artworks featuring dodos. I made several different pieces for him, including a map of Mauritius and a couple of these little papier mache fellows. He also a engendered a similar obsession on my own part...

Occasionally I get asked to make 3D illustrations other than maps - below are a few examples. The main features are carved from foam and covered in papier mache before being painted with acrylic. I use a wide range of other materials to finish the pictures, including beads, wire, and foam core board.
The pictures shown here are all around 100cm x 70cm and about 10cm deep, with a built-in, decorated frame incorporated into the design.

These fish were made to go on the illustrated 3D reef picture - I snapped this picture before I added them to the finished scene. They are sculpted from foam and covered in papier mache and painted with acrylics. 100cm x 70cm

I'm not big on sketching a plan, but when a piece is complicated or many-layered then sometimes it's really necessary. I think better in 3D than in 2D and a drawn image never really conveys what I want to make. Normally I dive straight in with a scalpel and start carving and then assemble all the component parts at the last minute.
This image shows the bare bones of the making process. The picture base and animals are carved from foam and then covered in fine, tissue paper papier mache, before being undercoated to receive the final layer of acrylic paint and varnish.
Once the base picture has been carved and painted, it is ready to add the animals which are carved and painted separately and attached with wood glue at the final stage.
The final stage is to add the animals, which have been carved and painted separately, to the carved picture base.
